When well-known British artist William Utermohlen was diagnosed in 1995 with Alzheimer’s disease, he started a series of self-portraits to help him deal with the difficult diagnosis. The result was several heart-wrenching works of art that document his mental decline before his death in 2007, according to a post on BoredPanda.com.

Utermohlen’s widow Patricia, referred to the portraits in an essay saying, “In these pictures we see with heart-breaking intensity William’s efforts to explain his altered self, his fears and his sadness.”
