Charles Hastie(1930 – 2015)

WORCESTER/HOLDEN – Charles Forsythe Hastie, 85, of Worcester, Massachusetts passed away peacefully on October 28, 2015.

Charlie was the loving husband of Marilyn L. (Scholtz) Hastie with whom he shared 61 years of marriage. Charlie was born on Jan. 1, 1930 in Weymouth, Mass. and was the 2nd son of James T. Hastie and Florence (Gray) Hastie and the brother of the late James Gray Hastie. His parents emigrated from Scotland in the 1920’s and Charlie was very proud of his Scottish heritage.

Charlie graduated from Weymouth High School in 1947. Next to his picture in the yearbook there was a quote “A man can succeed in anything he undertakes, it is all a matter of will”. This quote was prophetic and illustrative of Charlie’s work ethic throughout his life. He graduated from Northeastern University in 1952 with a BS in Mechanical Engineering and was a member of Pi Tau Sigma Mechanical Engineering Fraternity. He relocated to Schenectady, NY to work for ALCO Products, Inc. He subsequently graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with a Master of Science Degree in Technical Writing in 1958. He worked for ALCO Products, Inc. for 18 years starting as a staff Industrial Engineer and ending as the Manufacturing Manager for a 600,000 sq. foot plant with 750 employees. In 1970 the family re-located to Wilbraham, Mass. where Charlie was named Vice-President of Operations for Worthington Compressors, Inc. For the next 7 years he expanded production by 40% and increased income by 135%. He then worked for Parker Manufacturing in Worcester, Mass. where he was Vice-President of Operations. Charlie brought his managerial skills into his personal life as well and served as a Trustee for Salisbury Green in Worcester for many years.

When he located to Schenectady he met Marilyn where they were married April 11, 1954. Charlie and Marilyn raised 3 children together, Deborah Susan (Hastie) Earich of Vista, California, Jeffrey Charles Hastie and his wife, Angela of Holliston, Massachusetts and James Scott Hastie and his wife, Marie of Cheshire Connecticut. He leaves behind 8 grandchildren Bethany Sorenson, Zachary Sorenson and Gabriel Earich of California, David and Olivia Hastie of Holliston, Mass., and Kathleen, William and James Hastie of Cheshire, Connecticut.

Charlie enjoyed photography, woodworking, family genealogy and travel. After they retired, Marilyn and Charlie traveled throughout the US from Alaska to New Orleans and Hawaii. They travelled extensively throughout Europe and Russia. They very much enjoyed Australia and New Zealand. Charlie loved spending time with his family and was especially proud of his 8 grandchildren. He could often be heard saying “they sure are a good looking bunch!”

Marilyn and Debbie, Jeff and Scott would like to extend their warmest appreciation and thanks to Micah Shalev and Ben Herlinger as well as the staff of caregivers, nurses, and wonderful support staff at Dodge Park Rest Home for their care and love for Charlie over the last two years. Marilyn is especially grateful for the support she has received there.

A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, November 3, at 1:00 P.M. at the First Congregational Church of Holden, 1180 Main Street, Holden MA.
